Alumni Spotlight: Miranda Martinez
By Chris Strange

The Ouija Experiment is a horror film about five friends, a Ouija board, and how their attempt at creating a viral video goes terribly wrong. It was filmed in Dallas, TX in 2011 and stars, among others, Miranda Martinez, a former student at UAFS. The film had no script, relying instead on the actors’ improvisation and a detailed outline.

Miranda grew up in Panama with her mother. She’s known she wanted to act since she was very young; her major inspirations as a child were the soap operas and movies she watched with her grandmother. When she was in Panama she “would pray every day to come to America to become a movie star.”

She started college at Westark and went for three semesters before moving to Texas to attend Southern Methodist University. During her time at Westark she took choir classes, but never any acting classes. When she got to SMU she started taking acting for non-majors, though she says she didn’t get much out of those since they were so general. She graduated from SMU with a Bachelor’s in Marketing and tried the business world for a couple of years, but it just didn’t take, so she turned to the stage to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and producer.

Miranda produced stage plays for eight years. She wrote her own shows--comedies mostly--  and one musical which took her all the way to New York City. She loved the stage, and loved producing her own shows, but eventually stopped to focus on movie acting.

Miranda has appeared in several other films, including The Deadbeat Club and a short called The Life Project. The Ouija Experiment can be shown on request. To do so, go to the TOE website and click “Demand It.”
