NCAA Membership Hiccup

by Chance Combs and Lindsay Jernigan

For the 2010-2011 season, the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will remain a provisional member of the NCAA’s Division II Heartland Conference. The university’s initial attempt to join Division II sports was denied membership by a management council, with UA Fort Smith’s subsequent appeal also rejected by the NCAA.

According to the NCAA, Division II schools are required to field athletes in at least 10 sports, with male and female competition in a given sport counting separately. The UA Fort Smith athletic programs did meet the minimum number of university sponsored sports, but failed to roster the minimum number of participants required by NCAA standards.
