For students, fall semester is winding down but basketball season is just getting started. As we look forward to next semester and our new challenges, the UAFS Lady Lions and Lions teams look forward to a new and exciting chapter in their history. With their first opportunities to capture Heartland Conference championships both teams head into the season with high expectations and are considered among the favorites to claim the titles.
The Lady Lions have a team built around leadership and experience with about half of the roster consisting of seniors this season. Coach Whorton will look to extend the proud tradition of excellence that has been a part of this program in past seasons.
Coach Newman and the men’s Lions team are cut from a slightly different mold with only a couple seniors but a motivated young team nonetheless. With the recruiting classes of the last few years they look to be a big contender this year, as well.
The conference games begin just before the start of the Spring semester and the first home conference games are slated for January 12 at the Stubblefield Center. There will be plenty of fast-paced action on the court this season as these young teams battle it out for supremacy in the conference and aspire to go well beyond that. With the excitement of the new conference and status as a D-II program it is an excellent time to get out and cheer on the teams.
