Unusual Weather Drives Attention to Disaster Response

By Leslie Hassel

This winter, Arkansans encountered an unusual amount of winter weather. UA Fort Smith closed several times this winter due to inclement weather. Last week Dr. Kyle Parker, the Vice Chancellor of Planning and Technology at UA Fort Smith, reported the use of over 10,000 pounds of ice-melt – twice the amount that the university uses in a typical winter. With the unusual amount of winter weather we have received this year, it is no surprise that we welcome spring with open arms.

Cyber Crime Affects UA Fort Smith, Too

By Jean Powell Vosper

“DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL,” Kyle Parker, Vice Chancellor for Planning and Technology, warned in reference
to a fraudulent email sent to University email accounts on Friday, February 11.

The scam email, with the subject line “Verify Your Edu Email Account Now,” requests the recipient confirm their university email account by responding with their email username and password, date of birth, and country or territory, and bookmark (URL). The email also falsely states that account owners who do not respond within seven days will lose their account permanently.

It’s Presidents Day – Isn’t It?

By Jean Powell Vosper

Well, no, Presidents Day isn’t actually Presidents Day – officially, the federal holiday is still named Washington’s Birthday.

However, federal holidays are not always recognized by states, which may designate their own commemorative days. In Arkansas, we celebrate the third Monday in February as "Washington's Birthday and Daisy Gatson Bates Day."
