Applause for Applause: Announcing the Winners of the 2013 UAFS Writing Contest & Attendees of the 2014 Southern Literary Festival

In the fall of 2013, UAFS student organization and publication, Applause, hosted a creative writing contest for university students.  The Applause magazine staff selected the finalists through an anonymous evaluation of the works submitted to the contest, and Dr. Westcamp, Applause faculty sponsor, submitted the finalists to the faculty judges who then judged the pieces, selecting a 1st and 2nd in each category.

The winners of the UAFS contest will be published in the 2014 issue of Applause and are as follows:

Formal Essay

1st  – Linsday Miranda (Cedarville) “Alexander Pope, a Political Poet”

2nd – Staci Miller (Van Buren) “Jay Gatsby and the Nostalgia That Kills”

Short Story

1st – Jessica B. Weisenfels (Alma) “The Prize Fighter”

2nd – Jessica B. Weisenfels (Alma) “The Usage of the Outside Couch”


1st – Staci Miller (Van Buren) “Lizzie Dear”

2nd – Tim VanDyke (Alma) ““Riff on Brathwaite’s ‘Bread’”

*In addition to being published, 1st place winners in each category receive a prize of $50!

The UAFS Creative Writing Contest serves as a funnel to the Southern Literary Festival’s Regional Writing Contest; the winning works in each category are sent to the Southern Literary festival to represent UAFS in the regional writing competition.

As usual, UAFS students made an amazing impression and were recognized for their excellence! Student Tim VanDyke placed 2nd in the Southern Literary Festival’s Poetry category for his poem “Riff on Brathwaite’s ‘Bread’.” He will receive his award check, certificate, and will read his poem at the Southern Literary Festival held in Oxford, Mississippi March 27th – 29th.

Not only was individual excellence recognized, the entire group effort was recognized! With no small amount of awesome, Applause placed 1st in the Southern Literary Festival’s Journal competition, and will travel to the Southern Literary Festival Mrach 27th – 29th to receive the award.  Rhiannon Corley is the editor of the magazine and is supported by an amazing student staff and faculty adviser.
