Building Bonds, Breaking Barriers

Saturday, March 8, the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith held a very special event. The UAFS program Students Helping Students Succeed hosted the Upward Bound students from surrounding high schools for a day of fun. Both programs are designed and funded for the purpose of helping students succeed, primarily students who are first in their family to attend college.

The event, held in the UAFS Fitness Center, gave college and highschool students with similar backgrounds and goals a chance to meet and hang out. At 10:00 am the group got together and started playing games right away. As the students interacted and had fun they made new friends and formed relationships that could prove beneficial in the future. The SHSS’s goal was to help the young students become more comfortable with the idea of attending college and let them know that when they do come, they have friends to help them. The SHSS program on campus is a support group for students who are first in their family to attend college. These students provide the support and understanding for each other that their families cannot. By hosting this event, the SHSS students were also offering the same support to the high school students in attendance.
